今回は、英文契約書で使用されるexpirationとterminationについて作成した例文その他を通して英文契約書での使われ方の一例を作成した例文（法律の条文を除く）を通して契約書翻訳の視点(主に契約書で使われる場合の意味に絞って)から見てみます。いずれもなくてはならない言葉です。
- expiration/expiryについて
| expiration・expiry | （期限・期間の）満了，満期（日），終結、終了
動詞形はexpire ：(期間)が満了する，失効する |
この英文契約書や法律文書では、契約や法律文に規定されるある期間について言及するときになくてはならない言葉です。
The obligations of the parties as set forth in this Agreement shall survive expiration or termination thereof. （本契約に規定する両当事者の義務は、本契約の満了、または、解除後も有効に存続する。）
In case of the expiration or termination of this Agreement, the Buyer shall return the tool for sales promotion rented from the Seller to the Seller.（本契約の満了または終了の場合、買い手は売り手から借りた販売促進用のツールを売り手に返却する）
This Option shall become effective on the date on which this Agreement commences and shall expire on the date on which this Agreement terminates.（このオプションは、本契約が開始した日に発効し、本契約が終了した日に失効する）
The parties hereto, at the expiry of this Agreement, undertake not to employ employees of the other’s party for a period of at least five years from the date of expiry of the present agreement.（本契約の両当事者は、本契約の満了時に、本契約の満了から少なくとも5年間は、相手方の従業員を雇用しないことを約束する。）
上記に作成した例文のようにexpirationやexpire単体でも使われますが、他の語と組み合わせて、期間についての様々な意味を表します。
expiration date: 満期日、満了日
expiration of period：期間の満了
expiry of term ：期間の満了
The term of service of each director who is assumed as alternate or increase of the number of staff shall be till the expiration of term of service of incumbent directors.（補欠または増員で就任した各取締役の任期は、現任取締役の任期の満了すべき時までとする）
「期限切れ」とか「終わる」という意味では、契約書に限らず日常的に使用されます。
My employment-based visa will expire next month.（就労ビザは来月失効する）
My passport will expire next month.（パスポートは来月期限が切れる）
The copyright of this novel will expire in 50 years(この小説の著作権は50年後に切れる)
The subscription service expires when its service period come to an end.（サブスクリプションサービスは、サービス期間が終了すると終了します）
- termination/terminateについて
| termination | （継続すること・状態の）終了，終結、（契約の）解除,
動詞形はterminate ：（継続的なこと・状態を）終わらせる、（関係・契約などを）打ち切る、解除する、（人を）解雇する |
終わるという意味合いでは「expiration」と同じですが、例えば、「early termination of the Agreement」（契約の中途解約）というように継続している事柄を終わらせるというニュアンスで使われます。もちろん文脈的に「満期」の意味で使われることもありますが、やはり多くは「expiration」とは分けて使われるようです。
The obligations of the Contractor set forth in this Agreement of the shall cease to apply upon the expiry or the earlier termination of this Agreement.（本契約に規定の請負業者の義務は、本契約の満了または中途解約時に適用されなくなる）
During the term of the Agreement and for a period of three (3) years from the expiration or termination thereof, the partis hereto shall fulfill the Confidentiality.（本契約の期間中およびその満了または終了から3年間、本契約の当事者は本契約の守秘義務を履行する）
単に契約を終わらせるという意味であるなら、端的に次のような例になります。
Either party may terminate this Agreement immediately by written notice to the other party.（いずれの当事者も、相手方に書面で通知することにより、本契約を直ちに終了することができる）
expiration・expiry、termination・terminateはいずれも上記の意味以外にも様々な意味を持ちますが、冒頭で述べたようにここでは主に契約書で使われる場合の特に「終わらせる」の意味に絞ってみてみました。
